A Sansei's Experience
Sansei is the term referring to the third generation of Japanese Americans. The first generation, called Issei, were the first large group of Japanese that immigrated to the United States in the late 1800’s. The following generation and the first born in their new homeland, were called Nisei. I am a Sansei and member of the third generation of Japanese living in America.
As a result of growing up Sansei, the Japanese culture and traditions that have inspired and affected my art comes from both the old and the new. From the deeply held traditions and conventions of Japan that the Issei brought with them and continued to honor, to the new traditions and philosophy that were established by the Nisei as made their way in their new homeland.
This history has been both a very subtle and defining influence in my life. In my art I attempt to create the traditional images of Japan with a contemporary perspective, incorporating both the old and new methods and materials to capture the images that reflect Japan’s history and culture.
